The recently released GLA:D Australia 2021 Report comprised four years of national data that is extremely promising for osteoarthritis (OA) sufferers and health professionals alike.
GLA:D is an exercise and education program for those clinically diagnosed with hip and/or knee joint OA, which aligns with national and international best practice guidelines. Strengthening and neuromuscular exercises provide joint stability, confidence in movement and an ability to perform daily activities with greater ease.
Nationally, 10,424 participants took part in Physiotherapist led GLA:D programs between 2018 and 2021. Over 80% of participants reported knee OA as their primary reason for commencing classes. For both knee and hip OA groups, pain intensity reduced by 1/3 after three months and half the participants reported reduced pain medication use. These improvements were sustained after 12 months of consistent participation.
Of the participants that desired or had been recommended a joint replacement surgery prior to starting the program; 63% of knee participants and 49% of hip participants had not received surgery and no longer desired surgery one year after commencing GLA:D.
