Being a teenager is hard work. It is a period of significant physical, emotional and psychological change as children transition to young adulthood. During these years, adolescents are faced with numerous social, emotional and moral challenges, which they often find hard to negotiate given that they are still learning how to manage strong emotions and their brains are in a period of significant development. Stress is a serious health concern for young Australians. In 2015, a research study by Mission Australia found that almost 40 per cent of 15- to 19-year-olds are very concerned about their ability to cope with stress.


What is Stress?

Stress is a normal part of life for teenagers and can be caused by many different things. The more we learn about teens and stress, the better able we will be as parents to model the behaviors that can help our children learn to cope better with stress. Learning about why we get stressed and how to manage it more effectively is a great skill for life.


What is Resilience?

Resilience is our ability to “bounce back” from life’s experiences. It is about adapting to circumstances that can’t be changed, and one’s ability to become strong, healthy, happy and successful again after being faced with challenges and setbacks. Life is filled with challenges, particularly during the teenage years as this is a period where they are negotiating the path to independence, developing their identity and facing new and different experiences when transitioning into adulthood. As such, building resilience in an important part of adolescent development.

Angie has spent over 20 years working in the Elite Sport Industry inclusive of the AFL Players Association (AFLPA), Australian Cricketer’s Association (ACA), Australian Netball Team and the Australian Hockey Teams with expertise in athlete development, wellbeing counselling and mental health case management.

With graduate and post graduate qualifications in sports science, sports psychology, career counselling, general counselling and psychometric testing, she has a variety of expertise in supporting both the professional and personal wellbeing journey. Angie’s aim is to empower her clients to have the courage to optimise their health and wellbeing in life and work whilst remaining resilient in the face of adversity and change.
